The Bottled water industry promotes an image of purity, but
testing by the Environmental Working Group reveals a
surprising array of chemical contaminants in every
bottled water brand analyzed, including toxic byproducts
of chlorination in Walmart Sam's choice
and Giant Supermarket's Acadia brands, with the same levels
routinely found in tap water. Several bottled water
contaminants, some cancer-causing exceeded legal limits for

Testing reveals trace amounts of
pharmaceuticals in 46 million Americans drinking water. The overwhelming
majority of U.S. cities have not tested drinking water while eight
cities including Boston, Phoenix and
Seattle were relieved that tests
showed no detections. Chicago, for
example, found a cholesterol medication
and a nicotine
derivative. Many cities found the anti-convulsant
carbamazepine. Officials in one of those
communities, Colorado Springs, say they detected five pharmaceuticals in
all, including a tranquilizer and a
hormone. The drug residues detected in
water supplies are generally flushed
into sewers and waterways
through human excretion.
People take pills. Their bodies absorb
some of the medication, but the rest of
it passes through and is flushed down
the toilet. A vast array of
pharmaceuticals, including antibiotics,
anti-convulsants, mood stabilizers
and sex hormones, have been found in the
drinking water supplies of at
least 46 million Americans.

the pharmaceuticals slip through sewage
and drinking water treatment plants.
While the comprehensive risks are still
unclear, researchers are finding evidence that
even extremely diluted
concentrations of pharmaceutical
residues harm fish, frogs and other
aquatic species in the wild and impair
the workings of human cells in the
laboratory.

committee agreed that bisphenol A
(BPA), a chemical found in
polycarbonate (used to make
water-cooler jugs, sport-water
bottles and other hard plastics).

The same committee says the risk in

to BPA likely affecting the brain,
the female reproductive system and
the immune system. BPA mimics
the female hormone estrogen, which

girls and genital mutations in
infant boys. BPA has
